Male pine cone. Light micrograph of a longitudinal section through the male cone (strobilus) of a pine tree (Pinus sp.). The cone has a central axis (light-purple), from which emanate scale leaves (microsporophylls, dark blue to dark red). On their undersides are sporophylls bearing sac-like microsporangia (thin purple walls) full of developing microspores (red). When the wall of a microsporangium splits open the microspores are carried by the wind to the female strobilus. Magnification: x8 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
