Bob Marley Poster in HuangYao, Guangxi, China
There are two portrait posters in the alleys of Huangyao, China, a well-kept black and white portrait of Bob Marley and then about 10 meters away, a fading poster of Mao. Huangyao is a restored neighborhood, a tourist destination catering primarily to Chinese tourists. Spices and sauces, alcohol, and clothing are on sale in shops and in stands along the walls of the narrow alleys. Cars and motorcycles are forbidden, so the sounds and smells in Huangyao are much more pleasant than in most urban areas. Huangyao was founded in 927 during the Ming Dynasty. It has a more pleasant atmosphere than most restored cities in China since cars cannot enter the area even for maintenance since the roads are too narrow (most restored towns do have automobile traffic early in the mornings even if prohibited during working hours. The entire neighborhood does smell of spices and sauces.
