At the age of six, he went with his parents toLincoln, Vt., where he has since resided. He was educated in thecommon schools, Barre Academy and New Hampshire Institute;and taught school in Lincoln and Starksboro several years. About1873, he entered the boot and shoe and drug business, conductinga store at Lincoln Center, which he continued for twelve then sold his interest in the business to the Lincoln LumberCompany, of which firm he was secretary and treasurer for twen-ty years. This company manufactured butter tubs and was also a county judge from 1880 to 1890, and representativein 1898 and 1899. He has been town clerk about forty-five years,and has always been considered the first person in the town. He. He was always aRepublican in politics, and belongs to the Odd Fellows andPatrons of Husbandry. In former years, he was a member ofthe Independent Order of Good Templars. Mr. Gove married Mary Elizabeth, daughter of Asa andFannie Maria (West) Purinton May lo, 1870. She was born atLincoln July 2, 1852. They celebrated their golden wedding an-niversary May 10, 1920. Children, born in Lincoln : 3001—1 Amy Pearl, born March 21, 1876; married Frederick Phil-lander, son of George Elisha and Mary Tilden (Southgate)Smith Sept. 16, 1896.
