Mole diagnosis. Mole on the upper arm of a 25-year-old woman, with a measuring strip next to it. Also known as a pigmented, melanocytic, or melanotic, naevus, this skin mark is caused by an abnormality or overactivity of the melanocytes, the skin cells that produce the pigment melanin. Moles vary considerably in size and appearance. They are unusual at birth and tend to appear in childhood and adolescence. For two close-up views of this mole being assessed, see images C025/8066 and C025/8067.
