Gurage, Ethiopia, October 2013 Tedela Asfew's wife Lekelish Maregn, 35, making Arak that she makes to sell. The family have three cows, two lambs and one donkey. Tadela grows vegetables and enset on his one hectare of land. He has 800 enset plants. He also makes Areke and sells it at the local market. Day labouring earns him 60 additional birr a day. The land was a gift from his grandfather, he enjoys farming work and plans to instigate small scale irrigation to expand his farm including apples and forage for his animals.
