Carapce damage in Hermann's Tortoise (Testudo hermanni), probably due to predation

This wild Hermann's Tortoise was found at the Tarquinia salt-pans, north of Rome, Italy. The species has suffered severe declines in much of its range due to over-collecting by human beings, primarily for the pet-trade. Examining its underparts revealed damage to its carapace probably due to attempted predation by foxes.
