A glance at a map will show that Quebec is situated onthe River St. Lawrence in latitude 46° 48 and because of itssituation is terribly exposed to the full sweep of the easterlygales so frequent in this part of the country; it will also beobserved, that it is about on the same parallel as Bismarckin North Dakota; it has a population of about 77,000, andwith its narrow streets, and old-fashioned houses, is particu-larly susceptible to snow blockades, the roofs of the houses,one would think, having been purposely constructed withthe object of assisting to blockade the streets, by dumpingall the snow they receive into, or near the centre of theroads. In the Upper Town; between the GeneralPost Oflfice, Chateau Frontenac, and other principal hotels,via St. John street to Maple avenue, just outside the westernlimits of the city, and near the celebrated Plains of Abraham(where Wolfe fought his great and final battle) and return-ing via Grande Allee to the General Post Office.
