Asphalt. Asphalt is a brown to black solid or thickly viscous hydrocarbon composed of bitumen and other inert mineral matter. It is present in most crude petroleum and in some natural deposits such as asphalt lakes. It's primary use is in road-surfacing and roofing material where it is mixed with gravel. This sample is from a bitumen mine near Bentheim, Germany.
