Brig. Gen. Edward W. Winans was a prominent military figure during World War One. He commanded the 64th Infantry Brigade and played key roles in various offensives including the Marne-Aisne offensive, Oise-Aisne offensive, and the Meuse-Argonne offensive. He also participated in the March to the Rhine and served in the Army of Occupation.
