He is a memberof the National Education Assn.,Massachusetts Superintendents Assn.,New England Superintendents Assn.,National Council of Teachers ofEnglish, and the Essex CountyTeachers Assn. He is the author ofSpeaking and Writing English, acourse of study in elementary Eng-lish which has given him a nationalreputation. He was educatedin tlie pul)lic schools of this city andMethuen, Phillips-Andover Academyand Dartmouth College, heng grad-uated from the last named institutionin 1884 with an A. B. degree and withPhi Beta Kappa rank in 1890, Dartmouth conferred thedegree of A M. upon him. For threeyears prior to this academic traininghe worked in the weaving room ofthe Arlington Mills, and he taughtdistrict schools in the last three win-ters of his college course. Upongraduation from college, he beganthe study of Law in the office of N. Marshall of Lowell; alsoattended Boston LTniversity LawSchool.
