Benjamin Brodie (1783-1862), British surgeon. Brodie became House Surgeon at St George's Hospital in 1805. Between 1809 and 1814 he contributed six papers to the Royal Society in which he challenged the prevailing notion that body heat was caused by simple chemical combustion. As a result he rose to prominence and was elected a fellow of the Royal Society. In 1818 he published his Diseases of the Joints, which ran to several editions. He was a surgeon to both George IV and William IV, made a baronet (1834), President of the Royal College of Surgeons (1844), and first President of the General Medical Council (1858). 19th century engraving.
