Thesebarbs, if we may so call them, were tiedback to back round the lower end of a rope,a knot in the rope preventing it from drop-ping through the barbs, which were forcedto diverge from each other by four pegsdriven between them and the rope. Theso-called hook, indeed, was very like a four-pronged Fijian spear, supposing the shaft tobe cut off below the prongs, a hole boredthrough the centre of the cut shaft, and arope passed through the hole and knottedbelow the prongs. It is evident that if suchan instrument as this were taken into a cay-mans throat, the diverging prongs wouldprevent it from coming out again, and aslong as they remained unbroken, so longwould the cayman be held.
