Rockingham County lies in the southeastern partof NeW Hampshire, and is bounded as follows: Onthe north by Strafford County; on the east by theAtlantic Ocean; on the south by Essex County,Mass.; and on the west by Hillsborough and Merri-mac Counties, N. H. Rockingham is the only county in this State thatborders on the Atlantic, its coast being about seven-teen miles in extent. Incorporation.—It was incorporated March 19,1771, and named in honor of Charles Watson Went-worth, Marquis of Rockingham, by Governor BenningWentworth. There are thirty-eight towns in the county, of whichtwo were incorporated in the reign of Charles I., onein the reign of Charles II., two in the reign of Wil-liam and Mary, two in the reign of Queen Anne,George I. seven, George II. thirteen, George , and three by New Hampshire. The present civil sub-divisions are as follows: At-kinson, Auburn, Brentwood, Candia, Chest
