Inscriptions: Woven monogram on lower guard, center: Inscriptions: City mark on lower guard, center: DAUBUSSON 2 birds in conversation flanked by shelter with drapery forming canopy partially suspended from fruit tree (L) & large peacock perched in tree (R); staircase leading to large rock with arch under which a river flows; two-tiered pagoda with downswept roof supporting bells on top of rock; fantastic birds flying & additional multi-tiered pagoda (R) (BRD) picture-frame border with flower head pattern The pagoda may be based on an engraving in Fischer von Erlach's Entwurff einer historischen Architectur, 1721 (Cavallo). The woven monogram "" probably refers to a member of the Grellet family (Cavallo). A related tapestry,"Verdure a la Pagode et au Carquois", illustrated in Chevalier , is signed by the ROUGERON workshop [weavers], bears the city mark DAUBUSSON & features a coat-of-arms (Soustelle). The related tapestry, GCPA 0243434, bears the city mark DAUBU[S]SON but also features the woven signature MINGOUNAT (Soustelle). Chevalier, p. 129 states that similar tapestries are in public & private collections in Paris, Mobilier National; Angers; Le Mans; Niort; Chatellerault; San Francisco (Soustelle).
