Therefore, even thoughElizabeth Robbins Berry, in her interesting article on the American flag,states that this flag is still in existence and that it has thirteen stripes andtwelve stars (?) I think there must be some mistake, because it is contrary totradition and history as far as we know. I believe the flag that was hoistedby Paul Jones was that which was used by Washington at Cambridge, andthat either the flag now in existence is another of Paul Jones flags of a laterdate or the same one with the union changed. He was muchinterested in heraldry. Washingtons coach had emblazoned uponit his coat-of-arms argent two bars and three mullets or stars gules (awhite shield and three red stars at the top and two red stripes across theshield) and for crest an eagle rising out of a ducal coronet.
