The steam valvewill be controlled by a lever, from which hang two ropes, sothat the engine may be started and stopped from the groundlevel. The arrangement of cylinders being diagonal, the en-gine has no dead points, and can be started from any The cylinders are 5 in. diameter by 5-in. stroke, and the dis-tribution of steam is by means of piston valves. The enginehas been designed for a boiler pressure of 120 lbs., and is gov-erned by a Pickering governor to a speed of 250 revolutionsper minute. The whole design is exceedingly neat, and theoiling arrangements are such as to insure perfect lubricationwith a minimum of attendance. A New Coast Channel.—Work has been begun on a newcanal or channel which is to extend from Delaware Bay throughDelaware, Maryland and Virginia, parallel with the coast, toChincoteague Bay, a distance of about 75 miles.
