It is astrong and rapid grower, so that the striped bug hasnever injured it, as it grows away from them—beingearlier in ripening than any other winter squash. It originated on thefarm of a truck grower in North Carolina, aud Is a cross between the Kolb Gem and Mountaia Sweet, surpassing the former inshipping qualities and fully equalling thelatter in fine eating quality and flavor. It isfroma week to 10 days earlier than either,has a remarkably thin, tough rind, and as a keeper and shipper it has no equal. Its productiveness is unequalled; each vinematures 7 to 8 large melons; the vines are strong and rapid growers, and have more laterals than any other varieties; possessingthe valuable quality of rooting from every joint, which adds largely to the bearing andlife of the vines. The flesh is brightscarlet, of fine quality, almost down to the skin. The melons are of a dark green color and most beautifully striped, of oblongshape. The melons in market bring the highest prices.
