Smith, Box 159, West Medway, Mass. | Materials : Barbours Irish flax thread, No. 50, 3-cord, 200-yardsspools, and 11 -inch square of firm butchers linen. Finer thread andlinen may be used if Square, in Roman Embroidery. Trace or stamp the design on the linen, and buttonhole the linesclosely. The surface stitches are simple but effective, being theloop or birds-eye stitch, with which all are familiar. Push theneedle up through the fabric, then down again in the same place,leaving a loop of requisite length, — say, for this purpose, ]/A to yiinch. Bring the needle up at tip of loop, pass it over the thread and SAILOR COLLAR, IN ROMAN EMBROIDERY. 69 down on the other side, thus making a short stitch to hold the loopin place. In the corner leaves 3 of these loops start from a centralpoint, in the side scrolls they are single. Barbours Ulster etchingflax, cream or white, is used for this work with beautiful effect.
