The New Orleans Horticultural So- ciety held its monthly meeting August 21, at the Association of Commerce building. P. A. Chopin presided and Paul Abele acted as secretary, in the absence of C. R. Panter. The attend- ance was good and the members took a keen interest in all the proceedings. The discussion of a spring show in 1914 was the main topic and all the different points for and against it were carefully considered. It was finally de- cided to hold a chrysanthemum and general plant show at Horticijltural hall in conjunction with the openiiig of the Southern States Fair in the fall of next year. This being the first flower show given here for several years, the local florists, no doubt, will use all their skill and energy to make it an artistic success. To arouse more interest and to have a large attendance at each of the monthly meetings of the society, it was decided that the somewhat neg- lected custom of awarding prizes for plants exhibited at these meetings be taken up again, the judging of the ex- hibits to be followed by a general dis- cussion of the stock exhibited. The reading of papers on horticultural sub- jects was also advocated and several prominent growers present promised to prepare papers during the ensuing year. If these instructive and highly bene- ficial customs are kept up, the society will surely make a name for itself among the local florists, and can be as- sured of a full house at every meeting. E. A. Farley and A. Verlander were elected members of the society. R. E. Evans' Improved Challenge Ventilating Apparatus Write fir iliuttritei catalciue. Quaker City Ntckine Worb Richmond, Ind.
