For some years there had beenan effort to increase the population and improve the commerce of PerthAmboy, and various inducements were resorted to in the hope of securingnew settlers, and it may be that William Corlies decided to take up a resi-dence in what it was hoped would be the progressive capital of the 1738 it was stated that planters had not resorted to it as was expected,notwithstanding its commodious situation, and there is no evidence that Wil-liam Corlies left, even temporarily, his Shrewsbury home for Perth is possible, however, that shortly before his death he removed to BurlingtonCounty, as the inventory of his effects is filed in
