This photograph was taken at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of The Monastery of Saint John the Theologian on Patmos Island Greece. From Wikipedia: The Monastery of Saint John the Theologian (also called Monastery of Saint John the Divine) is a Greek Orthodox monastery founded in 1088 in Chora on the island of Patmos. UNESCO has declared it a World Heritage site. It is built on a spot venerated by both Catholics and Eastern Orthodox as the cave where St. John of Patmos had visions. In 2012, 40 monks reside there. From : The Monastery of St. John the Divine (Agios Ioannis o Theologos), is a fortified Orthodox monastery on the island of Patmos in Greece. In 1088, the Byzantine Emperor Alexios Komnenos gave the island of Patmos to the soldier-priest Ionnis Khristodhoulos "the Blessed." The greater part of the monastery was completed by Khristodhoulos in just three years. Its heavily fortified exterior was necessitated by the threats of piracy and Seljuk Turks. From : The small island of Pátmos in the Dodecanese is reputed to be where St John the Theologian wrote both his Gospel and the Apocalypse. A monastery dedicated to the ‘beloved disciple’ was founded there in the late 10th century and it has been a place of pilgrimage and Greek Orthodox learning ever since. The fine monastic complex dominates the island. From : Patmos must have been a very remote place in about 100AD when St John experienced a prophetic vision and dictated a description to his scribe, which after many years became the canonical Book of Revelation. The Apocalypse (as it is often described) is a very odd production conjuring up the Seven Seals, the Four Horsemen and the Seven-headed Beast .
