In 1825 Denis Buffet set up his workshop in Paris, his brother did so in 1830. Denis’ son Jean-Louis (born La Couture, 18 July 1813; died Paris, 17 April 1865) gradually took over the business after 1830. After 1844 it took the name Buffet Crampon. Buffet-Crampon were awarded bronze medals at the Paris Expositions of 1844 and 1849. The firm’s advertising for 1845 featured the new ring-keyed clarinets (later known as Boehm clarinets), as well as more usual 13-, 14- and 15-keyed clarinets, and a selection of Boehm flutes and piccolos. It is clear that Buffet-Crampon must have had some sort of commercial arrangement with his uncle’s firm for, at that time, the Boehm clarinet was still the patent-protected property of Louis-Auguste Buffet.
