In1884 he was the candidate of his party for Con-gress in the First Wisconsin Congressional Dis-trict, but was defeated as the district was hope-lessly Republican when that parly was united, asit was on that occasion. The Re[)ublican major-ity in the district usually ran from four to sixthousand. On the 2d of February, 1808, Mr. Merlon wasmarried in East Troy, Wis., to Miss Evlyn Merton was born in Schoharie County. N. Y.,and is a daughter of Henry and Catherine two years of age she came to WalworthCounty with her parents, and
