MAEY SOMEEVILLEwasthe daugliter of an officer in theBritish navy, Vice - Admiral Sir Wil-liam George Fairfax, and was born atJedburgh, Scotland, on the 2Gth ofDecember, 1780. She was educatedat Musselburgh, in the vicinity of Ed-inburgh, but in her early life, we aretold, there seems to have been no in-dication of that deej^ly philosophicalcharacter for which she afterwards be-came famous. Her youth was quiteunpretentious, and it was not untilshe reached her fortieth year that hertaste for scientific research began toexhibit itself.* To her first marriagewith Captain Greig, of the Russiannavy, is attributed the means of devel-opment of her latent powers, her hus-band, delighted by her wonderfulaptitude, taking great pleasure inteaching her mathematics and areneralscience. Captain Greig dying short-ly after this union, his widow was, in1812, married to Dr. William Somer-ville, who
