Antelope Jackrabbit Lepus alleni Oracle Pinal County Arizona United States 23 July Adult Leporidae

A desert jackrabbit pauses alertly. This jackrabbit's long legs enable it to make a rapid getaway. The long ears of the jack rabbit have evolved to radiate heat from large veins in the ears which carry cooled blood back to the body. The long ears also serve to detect very faint sounds at distance - in order to avoid predators.
