SECOND AVENUE AND FOKTY-SEVENTH STREET. IT was fitting that the great City of New York, withits vast German population, should have a churchdedicated to the illustrious St. Winfrid, who renouncedhis abbey in Saxon England to become the apostle of Ger-many. Born in Devonshire about the year 680; trainedto virtue and the perfection of the monastic state, hebecame a preacher of wonderful power over the souls ofmen in his own land; and then, burning with zeal tobear the light of the gospel to the heathen tribes of theLow Countries and Germany, he endeavored to convertthe King of Friesland. He was soon after made abbot, but renounced the dignity to gi^-e himself entirely to theconversion of the heathen.
