HHV type 6. Coloured transmission electron micrograph of Human Herpes Virus type 6 (HHV6) outside a human cell. Several circular virus particles are seen in cross section with the cell membrane at lower right (orange). Each virus has a core of DNA-genetic material covered by a protein capsid. This is surrounded by a light tegument made of fats and proteins. HHV6 reproduces by \taking over\" the infected cell, making it produce new viruses which bud from the cell' surface as seen here. HHV6 causes the childhood disease roseola infantum leading to fever and rash. It is also seen as a secondary & opportunistic infection in AIDS patients. Magnification: unknown."
