Tongue of the Rhone glacier in the central Swiss Alps after the formation of a new glacial lake. This view is from the lateral moraine deposited by the glacier around 1850, at the end of the Little Ice Age. Compared to 2004 the glacier has receded considerably; it has become shorter and much thinner. A white cover at lower left is used to reduce ablation (melting) where an artificial ice cave has been installed for tourists. For an image of the glacier in 2004 see C035/6705.
