The Catholic Officials make it their business tosecure one daughter from each wealthy family, more especially if it istheir only child, and place them in a convent (the inside workings ofwhich none but the Dignitaries of the Catholic Church and the poorfemales know) in order that they may exact money at their pleasurefrom their parents by representing to them that their daughter hasviolated some rule, and it requires a certain amount to appease thewrath of God. Who knows ? Doubtlesswe have ground to congratulate ourselves upon our pros-pects for the future. But we must not forget the argument.
