Backgrounds for BrodericPerse can be of any material but velvet, and shouldmatch the darker tints of the flowers applied to and white are never used, being too crude incolour and too great a contrast. If dark backgrounds arewished, invisible green, deep peacock blue, garnet brown,will give all the depth of black without its harshness; andif light, lemon and cream-whites will tone better thanpure white. Sunflowers are applied upon brown-red, redhollyhocks upon deep red, peonies upon deep commencing to work, cut out the flowers and leavesthat make the design, and group them upon a sheet of whitepaper; run a pencil round their outlines, and disturb them.
