Caption: Bikaner, Rajasthan, India - Apr 2003. A waiter walking through a passage at Gajner Palace, a former hunting residency of the Maharana of Bikaner sitting on the edge of the Thar Desert, now converted into a luxury heritage hotel. Princes once renowned for their extravagant pomp and spending, once dethroned and stripped of land, were allowed to keep their palaces. Deprived of the taxes they collected from farmers and villagers, they had to convert their stately homes into tourist ventures to avoid bankruptcy.
