Almond, Hard-Shell—A variety with large, jjlump kernel, and exceed- ingly ornamental when in bloom. Almond. So^t-Sheli—This is the Almond of the shops, and though jjreferable to the former is not so hardy: kernel sweet and rich. Birtternut i^hite T\';t:ti — A rapid- growing native tree,, producing edible nuts. Chestnut. American—A well known forest and nut-bearing tree: of great value for ornamental Gumbo—A Xew Jersey Seedling of the Spanish Chestnut, and claimed to be as hardy as the American. Chestnut. Japan—Tree medium sized and decidedly ornamental. It fruits when very young; nuts are much larger than the Spanish and equal to it in flavor. Believed to be a great acquisition. Xot hardy at the CHESTVUT. Spanish—A valuable species for both or- nament and fi-uit. It forms a hand- some lawn tree, ana produces fruit three or four times as large as the American variety. Not hardy at the north. Filbert, American—SmaUer and with a thicker sheU than the English, but of good flavor; hardy and productive. Filbert, English—The fi-uit of this being so much larger and better flavored than our native species, gives it the prefer- ence for cultivation over the latter in locahties where it '^'iil succeed. Filbert, Kentish ^ob—One of the largest and of filberts: oblong, meaty, and of excellent quality. Hickory, Shell Bark—To our taste, no other nut that grows, either foreign or native, is superior to this in quality : it possesses a peculiar, rich, nutty flavor. exceUed by none. The tree is of sturdy, lofty growth. The wood, on account of its great strength and elasticiiy. is highly prized for making agricultural implements, and is unsurpassed for fuel.
