CHAPTEK XVIII THE DISASTROUS RETREAT FROM PENLIN There now remains to be told the story of theencounter between Inouye and Turcheffsky, which, although it took place ten to fifteen miles to the northof Kurokis right flank, was just as much and as essen-tially a part of the battle of Yoshirei as was the turningmovement of the Guards to the south. The battle of Chaotao had taken place on the 19thOctober, and since then the Twelfth Division had beenheld in leash and prevented by Kuroki from pursuing itsadvantage, as far as some at least of the young bloods ofthat force thought desirable.
