The winged female (Fig. 267, 1,) is either dark green orbrown, with a row of black dots on each side of the body;the head and thorax are sometimes marked with black. The i^resent season, 1888, this species appeared in at leastten counties in this State, and in some instances did consider-able damage to wheat, etc., but were prevented from spreadingby the late rain, which also gave such impetus to the growthof the infested grain that in many fields the damage is scarcelyperceptible. On the 29th and 30th of April, and on the 1st,2d and 3d of May, un- usual flights of thewinged insects () were noticed inthis city (Sacramento)but they disappearedentirely with the ad-vent of the rain ofMay 4, 1883.
