Vietnam: The French assault on Nam Dinh, 11 December 1873. Engraving by Alexandre Ferdinandus (2 March 1850 - 8 November 1888), 1880s. The Garnier Expedition was a French expedition between November 1873 and January 1874 by Lieutenant Francis Garnier, who had been sent by the French authorities to bring back the unruly French trader Jean Dupuis. However, when Garnier arrived in Hanoi, he sided with Dupuis and captured Hanoi, the capital of Tonkin , before going on a lightning campaign to conquer most of the region within three weeks. He was eventually killed while defending Hanoi.
