With new designs by Angas, Danby, Wolf, 1871. layed his merciless dis-position in one of the unfortunate skir-mishes which often took place between theMaories and the English, and which haveafterward been equally regretted by bothparties, the white men having generally of-fered an unintentional insult to the na-tives, and the latter having resented it inthe heat of passion. On this occasion, a num-ber of the white men had been captured bythe Maories under the two chiefs Rangi-haeta and Raupahara, who were related toeach other by marriage, the former havingmarried a daughter of the latter. Some timepreviously, this woman had been accidentallykilled by a chance shot, which, as a matter ofcourse, her relations insisted on consideringas intentional. While the prisoners and their capturerswere standing together, another chief namedPuatia tried to make peace, saying that theslain on both sides were about equal.
