A pair of silver-mounted flintlock pistols from the armoury of Ludwig VIII of Hesse-Darmstadt, by Wittemann, Giessen, circa 1740 Two-stage barrels, octagonal turning into round with lightly widening muzzles, smooth bores in 15 mm calibre. Engraved locks signed "Wittemann · Giessen". Moulded, slightly carved and finely figured walnut full stocks with delicately engraved silver furnitures. One pistol with well-repaired tension crack on butt. The side plates display a cannon and trophies of war in front of a castle.
