March Against Mountaintop Removal Coal Mining
Blair, West Virginia - More than a thousand people marched to the top of Blair Mountain in opposition to the coal-mining technique known as mountaintop removal, in which the tops of mountains are sliced off to get at the underlying coal. Blair Mountain, site of a historic 1921 battle between coal miners and the industry's hired gunmen, is now threatened with mountaintop removal. Much of the mountain is owned by Alpha Natural Resources and Arch Coal.
