A gambling machine, such as those being played here, are often known as a ‘one-armed bandit’, ‘slot machine’, ‘fruit machine’ or ‘pokey’ and people ‘play’ the fruities, slots or pokies. This is a gambling machine that creates a game of chance for its customers. Slot machines are known as ‘one-armed bandits’ because of the large mechanical levers affixed to the sides of early mechanical machines and the games' ability to empty a player’s pocket or wallet as a thief would as the odds always favour the ‘house’. A large poster on the wall indicates that even though the players may well lose money, some will go to a good cause – Harold’s were contributing money to scholarships at the University of Nevada.
