Head, originally from a Figure, reused as a Pendant, 900–400 , Greenstone (probably jadeite) with pigment, 8 × 5 × 5 cm (3 1/8 × 1 15/16 × 1 15/16 in.), Long after the demise of the Olmecs, Mesoamerica’s earliest major civilization, which dominated the Gulf Coast of Mexico from ca. 1500 to 400 , their art objects were prized as relics of fabled antiquity by the civilizations that later rose to power in the region, such as the Maya and the Aztecs. This head originally belonged to an entire figure, but the body was apparently decapitated at some point
