Packing Tsarskoe Selo, 1917


Revolutionary soldiers and deputies packing up the contents of the palace at Tsarskoe Selo after the Romanovs left for Siberia. At the end of the "February Revolution" of 1917 (February in the Old Russian Calendar), on March 2 (Julian Calendar). On March 15 (Gregorian Calendar) 1917, Nicholas II chose to abdicate. In August 1917, the Kerensky government evacuated the Romanovs to Tobolsk in the Urals, allegedly to protect them from the rising tide of revolution. There they lived in the former Governor's Mansion in considerable comfort. In October 1917, however, the Bolsheviks seized power from Kerensky's Provisional Government.
