The Conway cabal, which in the succeed-ing winter assumed dangerous proportions, hadalready begun its work of discrediting Washingtonand Greene with congress, and partly on this ac-count Greene was sent. He succeeded in having aresolution passed relieving Washington from sub-servience to a council of war. But Greenes most important work at this periodwas the part he took in the battle of the Brandy-wine,
