THE CONSULATE GENERAL OF RUSSIA IN SHANGHAI, CHINA

In July 1914 in the place where Suzhou river runs into Huangpu river close to Garden Bridge south from Whangpoo Road a plot of land for a new building was purchased in the name of the Russian Foreign Office. The construction started in the same year in line with the design of a German architect Hans E. Lieb who had chosen an eclectic style which combined the elements of Baroque and German Renaissance. In December 1916 a 4-storey building with a total space of 3264 sq. m was constructed. Its official take-over and inauguration ceremony were held on January 14, 1917. According to the acknowledgment of the eyewitnesses this new building from the point of view of its architecture and the luxury of the inner decorations became the best among city’s consular offices and one of the most beautiful Russian diplomatic missions abroad.
