British Birds. Henry Leonard Meyer. 2nd Edition. London. 1842-47. Imaged at 1,200ppi directly from a large octavo (150 x 225 mm) set. Mildly cleaned with severely obtrusive over-painting faults and foxing corrected. Otherwise untouched. These near 200 year old images will reveal further underlying faults if severely treated. Print off-setting is entirely absent. Final minimal contrast and brightness adjustments returned the slightly faded originals back to their initial condition. The complete, 7 volume work comprises 322 species, including their eggs (not shown here). All are exquisitely rendered in spite of being produced by what appears to be etching on stone. Many images have pale blue-washed backgrounds not previously visible. Best rendered at 600dpi on A4 semi-matt paper.
