The crown is then fitted to the root, and requirements such as proper size, shape, and thickness at the portionswhere porcelain is to be built up, arenoted. If the surface of the veneer re-quires grinding, this should be done atthis stage, so that the veneer will beglossed again by the last heat, whichshould be high and of uniform final baking the platinum portionis polished, and the crown is ready for in-serting with thin cement and by gentlepressure. The crown should fit easily,as there is danger of breaking the thinporcelain on the sides of the crown oreven of checking the veneer itself. The joints are lapped and made asclose as possible, so that frequent heat-ing to a high temperature will not en-tirely destroy the solder; excess of solderwill flow over the surface of the plati-num, causing porosity and destroying the Fig. with porcelain for a peg lateral, asshown in Fig. 1. This crown is made by fitting a plati-num band—gage No. 31—to a root ortooth prepared in the same way as for agold cap, excepting that an overlappingjoint instead of butting edges is lingual and labial outlines of theadjacent teeth are marked on the tubeas a guide for grinding those portionsaway to gain shape instead of cuttingwith scissors. The lingual side is shapedwith a wheel on a lathe, and a piece of Fig. 2.
