Steam engine indicator, 19th century. Illustration of the Thompson design of steam engine indicator, patented in 1875. An indicator is a device used to record the changes in pressure in a steam engine or other pressurised device. This indicator is from the Schaeffer and Budenberg company, from the Buckau district of Magdeburg, Germany. Artwork from 'Chaudieres et Machines a Vapeur' (1911) by French civil engineer Max de Nansouty (1854-1913), part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
