Passing over a number of minor sales, the col-lection of the late Thomas Hakewell, of Harring-ton Square, February 23rd, included three note-worthy Gainsboroughs, which, if offered a fewmonths later in the season, would, doubtless, havecaused some sensation, and possibly have realizedconsiderably higher prices. There is no record ofthe excellent Portrait of the artist himself in a bluecoat having appeared in the auction room sinceJonathan Buttalls sale in 1799, when it realized afew pounds ; it is an oval, 25 x 19, 360 guineas;a Group of three children and a donkey undera tree, 35 x 27, 580 guineas; and the companion,a Landscape with four children and a donkey, 420guineas.
