Over onethousand had been killed or severely wounded by the military andpolice, and many others arrested, and the remainder made their escapeto Philadelphia, Baltimore, and the eastern cities and towns, where theyeither volunteered, or offered themselves as substitutes for those whowere drafted, and became the opprobrium and disgrace of the army forthe next year. About twenty-five of the police were killed, and perhapsone hundred wounded, and about thirty negroes were murdered, andsixty or seventy injured.
