Notmuch, of course, can be learnt from the leaves which are thin andsmooth, as in all tablets of this kind. But the cover is very elegantlydesigned and well executed ; the date about 1740. Although this example is in silver, the same ornament and decorationwould look admirably well carved in ivory. It consists of delicatelyformed scrolls of branches and foliage, repeated on each side. At the topa small cupid rides upon an eagle, and the centre has a mask or lionshead, below which are two grotesque animals from whose bodies thescrolls spring and extend upwards. The sculpture is signed with a German name, Schmide; but thedesign is either Italian or French, more probably the latter. The tabletsmeasure three inches by one an
