Islands of Orkney, Scotland. Picturesque elevated view of the south elevation of Kirkwall’s St Magnus Cathedral.

Islands of Orkney, Scotland. Picturesque elevated view of the south elevation of Kirkwall’s St Magnus Cathedral. Although there have been numerous structural changes throughout its lifecycle, the cathedral was originally founded in 1137 by the Viking, Earl Rognvald, in honour of his uncle St Magnus. The Church of Scotland cathedral is the most northerly in the UK and is, unusually, owned by the burgh of Kirkwall and not the church. Situated on Mainland island, Kirkwall is the capital and largest town on the Orkney Islands.
